Back to School - Keep It Calm:

September is here — new shoes, sharpened pencils, and the buzz of back-to-school. For children, this season brings excitement and a little uncertainty. For parents, it’s about resetting routines, keeping everyone healthy, and helping little ones feel calm and ready.

The shift from summer freedom to school structure doesn’t have to be stressful. With a few mindful habits at home — inspired by Relax Kids  and supported by seasonal wellness tips — you can ease your child smoothly into the term ahead.

Its a time of change — new classrooms, cooler days, and the return of routine. Our nervous systems aren't huge fans of change however by building calm habits at home, nourishing your child with seasonal foods, supporting their immunity, and weaving in mindful moments will help your child to navigate it with ease.

A cosy home, steady routine, and your encouragement are the best gifts you can give them as they step into this new chapter with calm, confidence, and focus.

1. Reset Routines for September

September is the perfect time to reintroduce structure after long summer days. Children feel more secure when life is predictable:

  • Earlier bedtimes: Move bedtime forward gradually to prepare their body clock.

  • Practice mornings: Do a “school run rehearsal” — breakfast, dressing, bag-packing — to reduce first-day nerves.

  • Evening wind-down: Replace screens with quiet time, reading, or a Relax Kids audio story.

2. Embrace the Autumn Season

As the nights draw in and days get cooler, children often need extra support:

  • Immune-boosting foods: Add seasonal berries, apples, and warming soups packed with vegetables.

  • Probiotics: Natural yogurt, kefir, or supplements help support the gut — the foundation of a strong immune system.

  • Outdoor play: Crisp autumn walks in nature help regulate mood and energy while boosting vitamin D.

3. Keep Common School Bugs at Bay

Autumn often brings colds and, of course, the headlice wave:

  • Add a drop of tea tree or lavender essential oil to shampoo, or use a diluted spray on hats and coats — these may help deter lice naturally.

  • Teach children not to share hairbrushes, hats, or hairbands.

  • Encourage hand-washing and elbows for coughing and sneezing as colds and sniffles begin to circulate.

4. Build Focus Through Play

With homework and lessons returning, concentration skills matter:

  • The Spot Game: Place a sticker on the wall and ask your child to sit, breathe slowly, and focus for a minute.

  • Shopping List Memory: Take turns adding items to a pretend list and recalling them in order.

  • Board games: Great for focus, patience, and problem-solving.

5. Create a Calm and Cosy Home Space

As evenings get darker, home becomes a cosy sanctuary:

  • Keep bedrooms screen-free where possible.

  • Add a calming touch — a plant, soft lighting, or autumn tones like warm oranges and greens.

  • Use blackout curtains or heavier bedding for deeper, restorative sleep.

6. Move, Play, and Breathe Together

Balance school routines with play and mindfulness:

  • Encourage outdoor adventures — autumn leaves and conkers make great natural playthings.

  • Try simple yoga or stretching in the living room.

  • Share breathing exercises before bed to ease the transition from busy days to rest.

7. Listen and Reassure

Children may feel anxious about new teachers, classmates, or routines. At home:

  • Give them space to talk openly.

  • Acknowledge their feelings — “It’s okay to feel nervous.”

  • Offer reassurance — let them know they are supported and not alone.
