Healing through your feet

Updated: Nov 19, 2023

There are 7,000 nerve endings on each foot.

The human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and tendons.

25% of all of the bones in your body are in your feet.

Reflexologists believe that the feet are the map of the human body and that all the various organs and systems of the body can be balanced by stimulating these pressure points.

This information can help bring us to a better understanding of why Reflexology feels so good and can have such a beneficial effect on our overall health and well being.

Walking or standing barefoot outdoors is hugely beneficial and I would go as far as to say is essential for human health.

As we walk barefooted directly connected to the earth each of those 14,000 nerve endings are being stimulated and we are absorbing electrons from the surface of the earth

The human body is made up of mostly water and minerals making it an excellent conductor. As these electrons pass through the body they can help to restore natural balance by counteracting the effects of free radicals. There are many proven benefits to being barefoot most centre around reducing inflammation, and restoring the bodies natural rhythms.

Reflexology is a Holistic Therapy that works through specific pressure points on the feet. Following stress, illness, injury or disease, the body is in a state of imbalance and the vital energy pathways may be blocked, which those who believe in the practice of reflexology feel can prevent the body from functioning effectively.

When I first came across it I was fascinated by the theory behind Reflexology and wanted to learn more. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. During training I needed some case studies and one of them was a friend who had been trying to get pregnant for a few years, by the end of our treatments I was picking up some changes on her feet and commented on them. There can be various reasons for these changes but on this occasion I was delighted to find out two weeks later that she was pregnant.

Many couples consider having reflexology treatments as part of the fertility journey and again the aim of the therapist is to help support couples through what can be a very challenging, emotional and stressful time in their lives. Not all women and couples who go use Reflexology as part of their fertility journey will get pregnant as there are often many different reasons there are also many other holistic approach worth considering.

Like many reflexologists I have had the joy of sharing this journey with many couples and believe it can certainly make a big difference in supporting your body into optimum health and balance to ensure a healthy and happy pregnancy and birth.

Many women also enjoy reflexology during pregnancy though it is often thought the benefits are only during the last few weeks in preparation for labour. There are however many benefits for the woman at all stages of pregnancy, life is so busy for many for us and taking some regular time out during pregnancy to be treated and nurtured by your reflexologist, to connect with your body and your baby will certainly help support your pregnancy journey and can ease many of the symptoms experienced during pregnancy.

People who receive regular reflexology often report relief from the effects of stress, migraines, constipation, insomnia, anxiety, depression, IBS, Menstrual problems and many more health issues. Others will chose to have monthly treatments in a “prevention is better than cure approach” and as a way of supporting their health and wellbeing.

Giving parents some simple techniques to use on babies and children is in my experience very effective at helping with constipation and in some cases bedwetting problems.

Reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe or treat specific conditions - rather, a Reflexology treatment treats the whole body. By relaxing the body and mind help to restoring its natural balance, which in turn may help to bring about an improved sense of health and well being.

The human body is perfectly designed for health and well being. Our job is to support it as best we can.

All therapies should be used as part of a holistic healthcare approach which if you have any particular concerns about your health should include consulting your GP or suitably qualified Medical Practitioner.
